ChatGPT Visibility Checker
How often ChatGPT names your brand or your site when asked the questions your buyers ask.
How it works
What is the ChatGPT Visibility Checker?
The ChatGPT Visibility Checker is a free tool that asks a GPT model five buying questions about your category and checks whether the answers name your brand. The questions are written from your home page with your name left out. The result shows how many answers mentioned you, your position among the vendors named, and which competitors appeared instead.
How to use the ChatGPT Visibility Checker
- Enter your website's domain, such as example.com. The tool reads that page's title, meta description, first heading and first paragraph to work out what you sell.
- Press Check ChatGPT visibility. The tool writes five buying-intent questions from your page, drops any that contain your name, and asks each one with no hint that a brand is being tested.
- Press Sign up free to unlock to see the report. It has already run; signing up only reveals it.
- Read the Citation Score, the share of the five answers that named you. Explicit Citation counts answers that gave your domain; Implicit Citation counts answers that used your name without it.
- Open Analysis Steps, then each query under Query Generation, to see your position in that answer, the competitors it named and the search intent it was written for.
Does ChatGPT use Bing to find websites?
Partly. When ChatGPT searches the web, it draws on third-party search providers, Bing among them, and on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. A page neither of them can reach is hard for ChatGPT search to cite, however well it ranks in Google.
So check both routes in. Make sure Bing has indexed the pages you want cited, which Bing Webmaster Tools or the Bing index checker shows, and that robots.txt does not disallow OAI-SearchBot, which the AI Bot Crawlability Checker tests.
GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot vs ChatGPT-User: which should you allow?
OpenAI runs three user agents, and blocking the wrong one is a common mistake. GPTBot collects training data. OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when someone in a conversation asks ChatGPT to open it.
Disallowing GPTBot keeps your pages out of future training and does not remove you from search answers. Disallowing OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers while whatever the model already learned about you stays. For a brand that wants to be recommended, that is usually the wrong way round.
Is a ChatGPT visibility score a ranking?
No. One run is a sample of five generated answers, not a position that holds. Ask the same question twice and the list of vendors can change.
Read a single run as one observation of what a buyer might hear. Run it again over several weeks and compare. The trend across runs is the signal; one score on its own is not a rank.
Does this checker use ChatGPT search or training data?
It tests what the model knows, not what ChatGPT search finds. Each question goes to a GPT model through OpenAI's API with no web search tool switched on, so the answer comes from what the model learned in training and nothing is fetched live.
That isolates one thing: whether your brand is part of the model's picture of your category. ChatGPT in the app can also search the web for some questions, and a searched answer can name a brand the model alone would miss. A brand that only appears when ChatGPT searches is being found through pages, not remembered. To see which pages a search-backed engine retrieves for the same kind of question, the Perplexity Visibility Checker lists the source URLs behind each answer.
Is this the same as asking ChatGPT myself?
No, and it is built to avoid the two things that skew a manual check. When you ask ChatGPT about your category in your own account, the chat can carry your earlier conversations and custom instructions, and you tend to ask the question you already expect to win.
This checker writes the questions from your page, drops any that contain your brand name or domain, and sends each one as a fresh request with no history and no hint that a brand is being tested. A separate grading pass then lists every company each answer named, in the order it named them, and checks whether yours is among them. You get five comparable observations instead of one conversation you steered.
What is a good ChatGPT visibility score?
There is no fixed benchmark, because the score depends on how crowded your category is and how specific the questions are. When all five questions run, the Citation Score moves in steps of 20: one answer that names you is 20, all five is 100.
Read it against your competitors rather than against a number. Every query in the report lists the vendors ChatGPT named instead of you, so if the same two rivals appear in four answers out of five, they are the bar. A zero means the model does not yet connect your name with the problems those questions describe. The Gemini Visibility Checker runs the same five-question test against a Gemini model, which shows whether the gap is specific to ChatGPT.
Why is my brand not showing up in ChatGPT?
Usually because too few other sources connect your name with the problem the question describes. A model learns which brands belong to a category from repetition across many pages, so a newer company, a renamed one, or one described differently on every page tends to be missed even with a good website.
The report helps separate the causes. Open Entity Extraction and Pain Points first: if the checker misread what you sell, the questions were about the wrong category, and the fix is a clearer title, meta description, first heading and opening paragraph, since those are what it reads. If it read you correctly and rivals still filled every answer, the gap is coverage elsewhere: reviews, comparisons and lists that name you next to those rivals.
Questions
- What is a ChatGPT visibility score?
- A ChatGPT visibility score is the share of buying questions in your category where ChatGPT's answer names your brand. In this checker it is the Citation Score: five questions, each counted when the answer used your name or your domain.
- How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
- You get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT by being named in the pages it learns and searches from: reviews, comparisons, roundups and forum threads written by other people, as well as your own site. Allow
OAI-SearchBotin robots.txt, and say plainly on your home page what you sell and who it is for. - How does ChatGPT choose its sources?
- ChatGPT chooses sources when it searches the web: it runs searches, reads pages from the results and links the ones its answer draws on. Pages that Bing has indexed, that
OAI-SearchBotmay crawl and that answer the question plainly are the ones it can pick. - What is the difference between GPTBot and ChatGPT-User?
- GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler for collecting training data, and ChatGPT-User is the agent that fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to open it. You control each with its own
User-agentgroup in robots.txt, and blocking one does not block the other. - How do I track ChatGPT visibility over time?
- Track ChatGPT visibility by running the same check on the same domain at a regular interval and comparing the Citation Score and the competitors named. The spyc platform does this across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Google AI Overviews, and stores every answer in full with its timestamp.
- Is the ChatGPT visibility checker free?
- Yes. The check costs nothing to run. You sign up for a free spyc account to see the report, which has already been generated by the time you are asked.
- Can I check a competitor's brand in ChatGPT?
- Yes. Enter the competitor's domain instead of your own. The checker reads their page, writes buying questions for their category and reports how often ChatGPT names them, along with the other vendors that appear next to them.
- Why do ChatGPT's answers change between runs?
- ChatGPT's answers change between runs because they are generated, not looked up. The checker asks each question with a small amount of randomness, as a real chat has, so the wording and the vendors named can differ from one run to the next. A trend over several runs says more than any single score.
